What is Film Club?
Film Club provides
Inclusive Social Skills Training using Evidenced Based research to teach social skills using: scripting, video-modeling, script writing, film-editing, and film making.

When/Where are the sessions?
Elementary sessions (1st - 5th Grades):

August 9th - 20th; 6 sessions (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday)
1:00 - 3:00 P.M.
United Way Room D; Bay Area Blvd.

Junior High/High School sessions (Ages 13 - 21)
:
July 26th - August 6th; 6 sessions (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday)
1:00 - 3:00 P.M.
Coffee Oasis (community room); Nasa Road 1

What is the cost?
$95 per person (GCLFEDS Members)

$120 per person (Non-GCLFEDS Members)

*Normal Cost is $275.  GCLFEDS is subsidizing the remaining fees.

What are the benefits?
Each student will have individualized social goals throughout the course based on an initial interview. Parents will be kept informed of the weekly curriculum. At the end of each course, each student will be able to leave with a  DVD of all the completed social scenarios they helped create. Students will also learn how to be a director, videographer, photographer, actor, script writer, and film editor. There will be an "Oscar-like" awards ceremony the last day of the course.


Who is the Director?

Film Club was created and is directed by Joanie Garro.  Ms. Garro is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Certified Special Education Teacher (CT). She has worked with individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities for over 25 years. She holds a Master’s degree in psychology from the Applied Behavior Analysis program at the University of Houston Clear Lake (2007) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education (1990). Joanie has worked in various roles including a special education teacher in the public school, an early intervention specialist with ECI, a rehabilitation specialist for adults with head injuries, and a consultant to schools, ECI programs, and NASA contractors.

5.  How to stand in a line and wait

6.  How to take turns and share

7.  How to show interest in a conversation

8.  How to interrupt appropriately

9.  How to read body language of others (i.e. if bored, interested)

10. How to know if someone is bullying you

11. What to do if someone is bullying you

12.  Gaining attention appropriately of adult/peer (raising hand, tapping arm, saying, “Excuse me”)

13.  How to ask a friend to play or hang out

14.  How to make a phone call and/or email or text (depends on age and parental consent)

15.  Who is a stranger/acquaintance/family member/friend

16.  How to tell a joke

17. How to order own food/drink

18.  TECHNICAL TOPICS:  How to be a director, videographer, photographer, actor, script writer, use a clapper board, edit films on a computer, joke writer, host, speaker.
